Everybody loves him, but I’ve never known him to suck up to anybody. As Scott Greenfield writes: “As much as we’ve become friends over the years, I have no doubt that he would be the first to rip my lungs out were I to take a position that he disagreed with.” That’s actually a bit hyperbolic. Again, in contrast to some of his admirers, and despite his well-deserved reputation as a mean motor scooter and caustic foul-mouthed blogger, he’s generally, in my limited experience anyway, positively civil to those who show up in the comments on his blog to disagree with him, and honestly engages them on the merits. When I jumped at the opportunity to razz him here for something one of his co-bloggers wrote, he showed up to make sure I had the straight story, but didn’t take offense. […]

Fair enough. And I now see from reviewing his biography at LS that Charles Platt is apparently not one of the Satyriconistas who’s a lawyer. I made the assumption that he was because of his prominent reference to the legal history establishing First Amendment rights for adult entertainment, which I know is also a focus of your legal firm. I also noted that the first comment to Platt’s post was from an associate of your firm and complimented Platt on the rainbow coming out his ass. And my post originally included a link to your indication in the balls-and-bread-knife comment thread that you would indeed exact Sicilian-style vengeance in a hypothetical situation involving a porn producer and family member. I edited the link out because it seemed impertinent. But my half-formed thought was, based on possibly untrue assumptions about the modern porn industry, that an individual would need an unduly large measure of underworld juice of his own to get away with such vengeance without intolerable risk to the rest of his extended family. Hell, maybe you’ve got such juice, in which case my half-formed thought would have been even more impertinent.

2. The spectrum of styles, opinions, and views among the Satyriconistas is, by design, quite broad. As the editor of the LS, I do not select authors according to how much they will agree with me.
3. The opinion expressed in each individual post is that of the author, unless the post is signed “by all hands.”
